Inhale, Exhale - Love Your Lungs
According to Chinese medicine, the lungs thrive in warm and damp environments. It is the reason why running, jogging, biking or doing any type of aerobic exercise in the very cold weather is not recommended. The frigid, cold air takes a toll on the lungs, which love warmth. It is also why smoking, which has a drying (hot & dry) effect, is the antithesis of what the lungs prefer and negatively impacts the lungs so exceedingly. You may not experience for years or even decades the accumulated damage of excessively exposing your lungs to frigid temps via outdoor exercise. And if you're working out, I don't have to tell you how important the breath is and how intimately related lungs are to breathing. As a perfumer and one who experiences viscerally the aroma of all things fragrant, being able to inhale deeply and without difficulty is something I cannot take for granted.Due to climate change, here in the northeastern part of the U.S., temps are unusually warm. You can still get your outdoor workout on without stressing your lungs. So go on and do your thing outside while it's safe. But once temps get below freezing, find a way to get your workout on somewhere indoors and protect/love your lungs for the long term.Easy breathing!
