The recent catastrophe of Hurricane Harvey has once again put nature via the weather front and center in our lives. It is a very serious time when it comes to saving this planet, and thereby saving ourselves. Severe Weather is causing much suffering not only in Houston, Nigeria, Maharashtra, and Mumbai has also been hit by extreme rains displacing hundreds of thousands of people. This is hurricane season and it's arriving in a very devasting way. Hurricane Irma is currently headed to Puerto Rico and possibly the Virgin Islands. It's time to get to work.
With the severe weather tragedy in Texas, I have been moved to share with you that I recently received an email that read, “On behalf of The Climate Reality Project, I am honored to inform you that your application to the Climate Reality Leadership Corps has been accepted. This is former President Al Gore’s organization. I was inspired to apply for this leadership training after seeing Mr. Gore’s latest film An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.
I am very excited for this educational opportunity. Along with a number of other students, we will be taught by Al Gore and other top scientists and environmental professionals, how to best inform and empower others regarding severe weather conditions. It is our mission to disseminate information that will lead to meaningful changes that leave a positive impact on the earth and thereby, on the climate. This is the kind of education that is needed in order to engender the wellbeing of all of humanity. In today’s world, no nation or person can be certain that severe weather won’t impact their lives or the lives of someone they love.
I was surprised when the Climate Reality Leadership application asked for the names of my social media spaces… but that makes sense in today’s world. When asked to write something about myself, I shared that it was my desire to help those most affected by severe weather (people of color and the disenfranchised). In addition to trying to navigate the disaster, these are the people who are the last to receive help, or aid of any kind, and the last to recover and regain a semblance of their prior lives. I also, shared that on Facebook; I am known as The Weather Sister. How could they turn me down?As many of you may very well know, I am quite in love with the beauty of this planet and all its amazing bounty. It is with nature’s plant life that we best feed ourselves. It is the healing and fragrant elements from nature that creates the foundation of all that Anu Essentials offers, from our herbal blended Oils and Spritzers to our flower-infused perfumes to our semi-precious stone bracelets.
